Selina Nkoile is a human rights activist from Kenya who is particularly committed to the rights of girls and women in the Maasai community. When she took part in the ASA Autumn School in 2017, she met people who would inspire her in the long term.
Who are you and how are you engaging in global education today?
My name is Selina Nkoile, I am an education activist and social entrepreneur from the Maasai community in Kenya. I run an eco-lodge and organic farm (Bomanoma) that serves as a learning hub for sustainable agriculture and a safe space for women and girls. As a human rights defender, I lead initiatives that support girls’ education, end FGM/C, empower women, promote conservation, and preserve our beautiful indigenous culture.
In 2017, you have been part of the ASA Autumn School for Sustainable Entrepreneurship. What was your take away?
First I was blown away by what young people from The African continent and Germany are doing. I am inspired to know them all. Secondly, I learned that with good mentorship, my idea can change the world, one Girl, one garden at a time!
What experience from your participation in the Autumn School do you still remember today?
Attending The Autumn School in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania from Kenya, was by air. My First Ever Flight! It was amazing to fly Near Mt Kilimamjaro.
You are working on women empowerment today. What advice would you give to people who want to make a difference?
To all young people making a difference: Focus on creating lasting impact, not just quick wins. Start small, listen with empathy, and build solutions with your community - not just for them (Meaningful Community Engagement). Finally, let’s harness our energy, knowledge, passion, and global exposure to drive innovative change that truly uplifts those around us.
Looking ahead: What are your wishes for the next 65 years?
Here’s to the next 65 years of fostering a supportive space where young changemakers can connect, collaborate, and create innovative, sustainable solutions to transform their communities and the world for the better!
